India has a very rich tradition of classical and folk dances. A variety of different dance forms developed in different parts of
the country. These dance forms include Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Odissi, Manipuri and Mohiniattam. Although an ancient form of dance, Odissi dance became nearly extinct in the colonial period. More recently the dance
has been successfully revived although no more performed in the temples.
Odissi dance is both graceful, sensous and spiritual at the same time. As a devotional dance, Odissi developed into an essential part of the temple worship.
The devadasis, or temple dancers, would dance for the Lord of the temple.
Traditional Indian dancers have performed during the five-day classical Dance Festival held at Konark (Konarak) every December since 1990. Visitors can enjoy the dances after sunset in an open-air amphitheatre
against the back drop of the dazzling and illuminated 800 year old Sun Temple and a star filled sky. An experience that should not be missed.
